The new iPhone 4S

The new iPhone comes with a sturdy looking voice recognition software, as well as a new operating system and many other new features.

In the wake of this week's sad news of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs passing on, the consumer device company also has much to look forward to. The iPhone 4S will continue the iconic smartphone series with another installment, as well as a new mobile operating system to bring out the best of the design. The software, iOS 5, has many features to set it apart from previous iterations. Apple calls iOS a "desktop-class operating system that's been reinvented for mobile devices."  The OS has many new accessiblity features, Twitter integration and global language support. The iPhone 4S will be released October 15, and iOS 5 will be available as a free download for iPhone 3GS or later.

The iPhone 4S comes in black or white, and has three capacity levels: 16GB for $199, $32GB for $299 and the 64GB for $399 with a carrier contract. It ships with a number of built-in apps, including chat system iMessage, which can send unlimited texts between iOS devices. The service uses the data plan, not SMS, so it does not add to text message count with its group texting, media messages or deliver and read receipts. The new device has a 8mp camera and new optics, and can record HD video at 1080p. Apple's iCloud integration stores content and wirelessly pushes to all devices from the handset.

Siri is the iPhone 4S voice-recognition software that operates across different applications to help send messages, set reminders, or search for information. Apple gives a prompt example: "On May 19 remind me it's dad's birthday" sets up a calendar reminder for that date on a confirmation prompt. A user can click the Siri button, say, "Tell James I'm on my way," and Siri will populate a text message with a contact and the content. It also recognizes and answers contextual questions such as "Remind me to call the vet." "Any good burger joints around here?" Siri uses the built-in apps on the 4S to find information. The demo looks much like voice features on Android, but possibly with better integration if the actual use is just as it is shown on the Apple site.
