micro social network

The uWhisp application enables users to share voice messages directly on Facebook, Twitter and other types of websites. This initiative is yet another step towards audio messaging gaining a foothold on social networks.

Will audio prove to be another string to the social network bow? TweetVox offers a system
of geolocated voice message sharing via social media. In the same vein, four students at
the Barcelona School of Informatics, part of the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC),
have developed a new app. Their system is called uWhisp, and it too enables users to send
voice messages via Facebook, Twitter and other sites. But with a difference: you have to use
a plug-in installed on your web browser. “This is a promising initiative, because it uses an
audio format which is currently under-used on social media
" Erwan Le Nagard, social media
expert at leading telecoms provider Orange, told l'Atelier.

Voice on social media

First you have to register on the uWhisp website if you wish to use the uWhisp application,
which is a simple plug-in installed on your web browser and then displayed directly within
Facebook or Twitter, for example. The same principle will apply to other sites where you
might wish to leave a voice message. The plug-in automatically creates a widget in the
web browser for directly recording and then sending voice messages. Once you have made
a recording of your message it will be stored in a local audio file, where uWhisp enables
preview to make sure that the message is correct as far as the sender is concerned. A link is
then made to Facebook. “This kind of tool opens up new ways of doing things, and consumers
will be able to interact in a different way with brands, for instance
,” explained Erwan Le

A channel in search of a role

The objective is to emphasise voice more on the web. "This service seems to be positioning
itself close to conversational marketing,
” continued Le Nagard. However, access to the
content is rather limited. It’s difficult to reference it on search engines, unless you do so by
complementing the audio file with a text file which describes the content. Everything depends
on what it’s going to be used for. “You have to appreciate that audio is in its infancy and that
it has yet to find its place on the social media,
” he pointed out. For the moment, “it could be
used as an extra channel, but its true role remains to be determined”.
