LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter are all being leveraged by companies to find new employees. A recent study shows that more companies will do so in the future as well.

More US companies are hiring through social networks - up to 89 percent this year from 83 percent in 2010. Social Web recruiting platform Jobvite released their Social Recruiting Survey results this month, which shows that many companies (64 percent) have expanded to two or more networks in the search for skilled labor.

The Jobvite study was conducted in June 2011, and polled human resources and recruitment professionals, as well as aggregated data from their own customers. Two-thirds of polled employers have made successful hires through social networks, and 55 percent plan to invest more in this type of recruiting.

Referrals are the most highly rated source for candidate quality - ten percent of referral candidates are hired, as compared with one percent of general applicants. “The data show that recruiting departments, like marketing departments, are reaching and engaging their targets in multiple social networks,” said Dan Finnigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jobvite. “The fastest moving companies increasingly use the richness of profiles in LinkedIn, the power of online connections in Facebook, and the instant reach of Twitter to develop valuable talent pools and make new hires.”

LinkedIn was most popular for companies (87 percent), followed by Facebook (55 percent) and Twitter (47 percent), but as mentioned above, most use more than one social channel to find prospectives. Yet for job seekers (92 percent of US job seekers use social networks), the numbers were quite different - under forty percent of this group uses LinkedIn, while nearly eighty percent use Facebook, and forty percent use Twitter.

This suggests that most job seekers are using their casual rather than professional social networks for referrals, and not without effect - million job seekers used online social networks to find their last job.
