eBay Bans Sale of Cat and Dog Fur in Germany, And Other European Countries

eBay [EBAY] has announced that it will ban the sale of dog and cat fur on their German-language sites in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, beginning Tuesday. This is in response to complaints from animal rights groups, who claim that vendors are selling fur and faux-fur products made from the pelts of dogs and cats. eBay attracted the attention of animal rights groups when a cat-fur coat was posted for sale on their French site in February. Dog and cat fur, produced mainly in China and distributed primarily in the U.S. and Europe, is sold in unlabeled or mislabeled fur products. Millions of cats and dogs – many domestic – are killed for their fur each

The ban will also include France, Italy, and Spain. A ban already exists in the U.K., and is being considered for the American site. Banned products include clothing, blankets, toys, and key chains.

A European law interdicting the sale of cat and dog fur will go into effect on December 31. The sale was banned by the U.S. Congress in 2000.

Below is a video on a China Dog and Cat Fur Farm Investigation. Viewers discretion advised.

The auction site, which does not allow the sale of live animals, is attempting to stop the trade in illegal animal products on its site. In June last year, eBay banned the international sale of ivory on the website, but the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) reports that sales of illegal ivory have actually risen since this restriction went into effect. eBay has also taken flack for the sales of endangered-animal skins posted on its site.

A 2005 study by the IFAW revealed that the commerce of illegal animal products has increased because of the accessibility and anonymity afforded by the internet.

China mislabels dog and cat fur and still sells these furs on ebay as rabbit, kyote, gae wolf etc etc. Once the EU ban on dog and cat fur into the EU starts in 2009, how will ebay be able to control this massive market. Ebay should not sell fur on its sites, this cruel and often illegal trade cannot be controlled over the internet. Please stop ebay.

With E-bay all the traffics are possible. I am not ready to buy on this site which is so little considering on the origin of the goods.

Salut Danièle - you're right. eBay is so large it's got to be next to impossible to police. Like craigslist, which is getting most of the news right now.
