The Final Day of TechCrunch 50, FTW

By September 11, 2008

After three days of innovative marketing, carefully researched crowd and cloud surfing, playful spelling and truncated phrases, what can a company do to stand out? Dominating the horizon, beyond the trays of tamales, stands an igloo. Inside the igloo is a projection dome, and after being passed some intimidating goggles, the imagery snaps into perspective. Micoy has released a 3D image format that flattens all previous incarnations. Omni-3D technology "far exceeds the 'sweet spot' 3D available in theaters now and can provide a true omni-directional 3D experience."

All parts of the dome remain in focus and with depth, even when walking to different areas in the dome. When asked how it works, the exhibitor explained, "We broke the laws of optical physics." Currently awaiting content, Micoy is working with theaters and planetariums as potential venues. The technology is integrated into the image itself, so no special hardware is needed. Because of this, pre-existing dome theaters have little upgrading cost to implement this system.

Another highlight of the last day of TC50 was . Waget is currently in private alpha in both Japan and San Francisco. A marketing tool currently focused on restaurants, Waget provides users a simple mechanism that can be accessed through their mobile phones.

The user sends the phone number of a favorite restaurant to Waget, receives a message with the restaurants address and directions, and forwards it to friends. By simplifying input to texting a telephone number, recommending a restaurant is easy and can happen anywhere.

Restaurant owners benefit by having their regular customers promote for them, and can further encourage this to happen. The service becomes a proxy for the owners who can email the recommending customer. This email can be a special offer or coupon, specified by the owner. Waget derives its revenue from these transactions, so that the service is free to use at the customer level.
