Flash and AIR Support for Mobile, Including iPhone

Adobe Systems Incorporated announced Flash Platform advancements today including Adobe AIR for mobile devices. This will bring Flash support to Google's mobile operating system, Android, this year. Adobe AIR gives Web developers technologies to create Internet applications that work on the desktop and across multiple operating systems, and now that includes mobile OS. With this development, Adobe AIR apps can use the functionality unique to mobile hardware, such as "multi-touch, gesture inputs, accelerometer, geolocation and screen orientation." According to the press release, Flash Platform and Adobe Creative Suite developers can now reuse app code between one mobile platform and another, such as between Android and the iPhone. This will be more efficient than the old workflow, by saving the currently necessary work of writing large amounts of new


While native Flash will still not be available for the iPhone, the new Packager for iPhone, as mentioned in the Adobe AIR blog, exports the applications that are created in Flash into iPhone-native apps.

The new Flash 10.1 player will be released in the next few months, and will extend Flash to mobile browsers. The player will run consistently across desktop and mobile browsers, except for the iPhone. This will begin a phaseout of Flash Lite, according to TechCrunch, except for Windows Mobile, which will not support 10.1 initially but is currently working on a browser plug-in.

AIR on Android will be available in the second half of 2010, but until then developers can use the iPhone Packager to bring their apps to the iTunes App Store.

Most blogs are expecting that iPhone will eventually give in to Flash support demand. While the reason for the disconnect is due to the frequency of Adobe-related crash reports, this may not be enough to convince a market that treats Flash as a Web media industry standard.
