Google and OnStar Connect Drivers to Their Cars

By June 02, 2010

The Chevrolet Volt will be a well connected Electric Vehicle (EV), thanks to two new features resulting from the EV mobile app partnership between OnStar and Google announced last month at Google I/O. Originally, OnStar, a sub

sidiary of General Motors, was dedicated to improving security and safety in GM’s vehicles. Now, OnStar is evolving its position by developing a connective technology, thus the partnership with Google.

By using Google Voice Search Technology with their Android handset, owners can vocally search for a destination and send it from their device to their car. Owners can also be voice-guided to their vehicle from their current location. This option is available with Google Maps Navigation.

The smartphone mobile application will allow drivers to charge their cars or schedule charges. The device will allow drivers to remotely control their car's climate and will show miles per gallon, miles driven on the last trip taken and as well as over the car's lifetime. These features are in addition to ability to lock and unlock the vehicle or find vehicle charging stations. These features were announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.

All of this technology was developed in order to improve connectivity between drivers and their cars. "These two new features add to the suite of mobile application features for Volt that give Volt owners a personal connection to their car" said Tony DiSalle, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. "Connecting customers to their cars is one way we're using technology to provide value and a real useful benefit to the Volt owner." The app will be supported by the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid.
Regarding usage, it’s obvious that this application will be helpful. The “find my car” function will be useful, for example in the parking lots of large malls. Thus, searching and sending directions directly from their device to their car will help drivers to plan trips in a safe and relaxing way.
