As usual, the iPhone 4 launch was quite the event. (Is something really an event when it can be described with 'as usual'?) While we fear that Apple’s launch of a new version or product every two months might take the excitem

ent out of standing in line for hours in front of the nearest Apple Store, that day is not yet at hand.

Apple says that it has already sold 1.7 million iPhone 4’s, the company’s most successful launch ever. Even if more than 75 percent of iPhone 4 buyers were upgrading from previous versions, according to an initial survey by Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster.

Fifty-five million smartphones were shipped in the first quarter of 2010, according to ABI.

RIM reported a record number of Blackberry sales this quarter, shipping 11.2 million devices. Nokia also saw its smartphone shipments rise from 20.8 million to 21.5 million quarter-on-quarter. iPhone shipments rose from 8.7 to 8.8 million in that period.
