TC50 "Social Media Streams" Demo Impressions

LearnVest is a personal finance site designed primarily for women. Users can customize what aspects of their personal finances are most important to them, from mortgages to grad school payments to credit scores. LearnVest offers a step-by-step financial walkthrough, giving expert advice for financial concerns like dealing with debt and it promises to cover every financial event that one can come across. Nice design. Game dynamics were criticized by VCs. lissn, which was introduced with the promise to “make Robert Scoble’s head explode,” connects users with real-time conversations. IM-ing with rich metadata? Conversation-based advertising. Very hashtaggy.

One really cool thing is real-time translation to any native language, thanks to Google translate. Conversation can also been scaled to geographic regions, so if you only want to see only what people in Barcelona are saying, you can.

At the moment, lissn is in a limited private beta. As the presenter explained it, it’s essentially Twitter without the character cap.

Radiusly does a lot of the same things as the other demoers in this space. Think Twitter + LinkedIn. Think lissn.

Stribe have been sharing our office space, so I’m biased. They did a good job bridging the Atlantic gap by using a Stanford-Cal football game as the example in their demo. Stribe’s code puts a social-newtork layer over any web site. Panel reactions: A concern is whether there is integration with other social networks; another is that they’re trying to do too many things at once.

Clixtr. “Creating the ultimate social camera.” This is definitely an example of a company that might think about going with the traditional spelling of their name. It seems a bit like Zannel, but the cool thing is that it sends the photos you’ve taken to others’ devices instantaneously.
