Woman Indicted on Suicide Relating to Myspace Messages

A Missouri woman has been indicted on charges relating to the suicide of a 13 year-old girl after she killed herself because of a hoax perpetrated by the woman. Lori Drew, along with other conspirators, created a Myspace accoun

t for a made up16 year-old boy named Josh Evans, and after terrible and cruel messages, 13 year-old Megan Meier hanged herself in 2006.

Apparently Drew suggested using Myspace to obtain information about what Megan was saying about her daughter. The two were former friends.

The online relationship with the phone Josh Evans culminated in cruel messages that were intended to end the relationship, as it was a joke gone too far. One of the messages stated that the world would be a better place without her.

Shortly thereafter, Megan committed suicide.

Drew is charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of unauthorized access of protected computers to get information to inflict emotional distress.

Drew and the co-conspirators “used the information obtained over the MySpace computer system to torment, harass, humiliate, and embarrass the juvenile MySpace member," the indictment charged.

"Whether the defendant could have foreseen the results, she's responsible for her actions," said Salvador Hernandez, assistant agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office. FBI officers in St. Louis and Missouri were in charge of the investigation.

The charges pertain to the Terms of Service agreement users sign when creating a new account.

The agreement prohibits users from promoting “information that you know is false or misleading,” posing as someone under the age of 18 when the user is over that age, using information gathered on the site to “harass, abuse or harm other people,” and more provisions that pertain to the charges.

Both Megan’s mother and Myspace are named as victims in the case.
